Roads
contribute to the economic, industrial, social and cultural development
of a nation. It is the basis of all infrastructure. After creation
of the state of Jharkhand, traffic growth has been tremendous. Hence
strengthening of the road infrastructure is essential for the development
of Jharkhand.
Till 1999, Jharkhand had a total of around 1105 KM of National highways.
There are 4600 KM's of State Highways of single lane, intermediate
lane and double lane, having equivalent single lane length of 6600
KM. There are about 400 KM of district board roads and REO roads
taken over and included in the State Highways (SH) network. Thus
the total length is around 7000 Kms. Recently 555 KM of State Highways
have been notified as national highways but these have not yet been
entrusted to State PWD. Thus the length of State Highway would now
be around 6450 KM (equivalent single lane) and that of national
highways would be around 1660 Kms.
It
is envisaged that development of air transport will be accelerated
during the Ninth Five Year Plan period with the consequent need
for augmentation of training and education facilities for various
categories of pilots and supporting staff as well as construction
and development of runways, hangars, passenger loungers etc.
